With a true circle hook, because the point of the hook is so curled in, it cannot hook onto most areas of the fishes' mouth/throat, except for the corner of their mouth or top "lips" and I believe the fish has to be swimming away from you or at an angle from your line, not facing you, for the hook to grab into the fish.
