Seductive Poison is both an unflinching historical document and a suspenseful story of intrigue, power, and murder. Well, cults are pretty weird and cult leaders are bad people. I would rather have read the memoir and then have a commentary filling in the details. It really does read like a thriller, and you have to remind yourself it’s a true story as you read it. Layton's story is both heartbreaking, moving and as I've said at times incredibly frustrating just because you can feel the helplessness of her situation. Cults also consult with one another to learn the tricks and to work together to keep governments and concerned relatives at bay. The first 50 pages or so were a little hard for me to get through, but I kept reminding myself Ms. Layton was giving back story that would be pertinent later in the book. Jim Jones managed to gather nearly a 1000 people into his clutches by brainwashing, finding the flaws in people and negating them by using a skill to make them feel more confident.
